RetroGrip® Social Housing Walkway Project
RetroGrip® anti-slip decking inserts installed on an existing residential walkway to improve safety for residents without replacing the decking.
RetroGrip® Installed on Existing Residential Decking Walkway
This social housing project involved improving safety on an existing timber decking walkway serving multiple residential properties.
The original walkway had been constructed using standard grooved softwood decking. Over time, the decking became slippery during wet weather and periods of algae growth, creating concerns about resident safety.
The client required a practical and cost-effective solution that could improve slip resistance without the expense and disruption of completely replacing the existing decking structure.
The Challenge
The decking formed the primary access route to a number of residential properties and was used daily by residents throughout the year.
Although the decking remained structurally sound, the grooved timber surface had become slippery in certain weather conditions, particularly during wet periods.
Replacing the entire decking structure would have involved significant cost, disruption and inconvenience for residents.
The Solution
RetroGrip® anti-slip inserts were selected as a retrofit solution for the existing decking boards.
The aluminium inserts were installed directly into the existing grooves of the decking, creating a highly slip-resistant walking surface while retaining the original timber deck.
By upgrading the existing decking rather than replacing it, the project achieved a significant improvement in safety while reducing installation costs and disruption.

Retrofit Upgrade
Existing decking upgraded without replacement.

Resident Access Route
Improved grip for daily pedestrian use.

Insert Profile
Aluminium insert with anti-slip aggregate surface.

Finished Surface
Improved slip resistance while retaining the existing deck.
The Result
The completed installation provided a significant improvement in slip resistance across the residential walkway while allowing the existing decking structure to remain in place.
Residents benefited from a safer access route throughout the year, particularly during wet weather when standard grooved decking can become slippery underfoot.
The project demonstrates how RetroGrip® can provide a practical alternative to complete decking replacement where the structure remains sound but additional slip resistance is required.
