Anti-Slip Stair Nosing for Safer Outdoor Steps

RetroGrip® Stair Nosing provides a highly visible anti-slip leading edge for external steps, decking stairs, timber stairways and access routes. Manufactured from durable aluminium with a bonded aggregate anti-slip surface, the nosing helps reduce slip risk in wet, icy and contaminated conditions.

This retrofit stair nosing is suitable for domestic, commercial and public environments where outdoor steps need improved grip, clearer step edge definition and a more slip-resistant walking surface.

The nosings can be bonded to suitable surfaces using a good quality external-grade specialist adhesive, such as Flexy Fix, where appropriate. Mechanical screw fixing can also be used where required, depending on the substrate, exposure, traffic levels and project specification.

Fixing note: Screw fixing is not required in every situation. The correct fixing method depends on the step surface, condition of the substrate and intended use. Adhesive fixing may be suitable for many applications, while mechanical fixings may be preferred for higher-use areas or where additional security is needed.

Is RetroGrip® Stair Nosing Right for Your Steps?

RetroGrip® Stair Nosing is designed for suitable existing steps where the structure is sound but improved grip and edge visibility are required. It is not intended to repair loose, rotten, broken or structurally unsafe steps.

Usually SuitableCheck First
Outdoor timber steps and decking stairsRotten, loose or unstable timber must be repaired or replaced first
Composite steps and many external step surfacesSubstrate must be clean, dry, sound and suitable for fixing
Garden steps, public access steps and commercial stairwaysHigh-use areas may require mechanical fixing as well as adhesive
Steps needing clearer edge visibility and additional gripUneven or damaged step edges should be assessed before installation

How to Make Outdoor Steps Safer

Outdoor steps can become slippery due to rain, frost, algae, moss, shade, leaf debris and worn step edges. Anti-slip stair nosings help by adding a durable grip surface at the leading edge of the step, while also making the step edge easier to see.

For decking stairs, garden steps, external timber steps and commercial access routes, a retrofit aluminium stair nosing can be a practical way to improve safety without replacing the full step structure.
