Anti-Slip Decking for Riverside Access Platforms

Rushbanks Farm Campsite is a popular riverside camping destination situated on the banks of the River Stour in Suffolk. The site offers guests direct access to the water for paddling, swimming, canoeing and enjoying the natural surroundings.

To improve access to the river, a series of timber platforms were installed along the riverbank, creating dedicated areas where guests could safely enter and leave the water. As these platforms are located immediately adjacent to the river, they are regularly exposed to moisture, wet footwear, changing weather conditions and frequent seasonal use.

The Challenge

Decking installed beside rivers and waterways can become particularly slippery due to constant exposure to water, algae, mud and organic debris. Traditional timber decking can quickly lose grip under these conditions, creating a potential slip hazard for visitors.

Rushbanks Farm required a decking solution that would provide reliable slip resistance while retaining the natural appearance expected within a countryside campsite setting. The platforms also needed to withstand regular pedestrian traffic and repeated exposure to wet conditions throughout the camping season.

The Solution

GripDeck® supplied 28mm x 145mm pressure-treated softwood anti-slip decking complete with three factory-applied anti-slip inserts per board. The decking was supplied cut to exact project lengths to simplify installation and provide a neat, consistent finish across the riverside platforms.

Due to the riverside location and the intended use of the platforms, a three-insert layout was specified to maximise slip resistance. Guests regularly access the platforms with wet footwear after entering and leaving the River Stour, creating conditions where additional grip is beneficial. The increased insert coverage helps provide enhanced underfoot traction while retaining the natural appearance of timber decking.

The pressure-treated softwood decking blends naturally into the riverside landscape while the factory-applied GripDeck® inserts provide long-lasting slip resistance without compromising the appearance of the finished installation.

The Result

The completed platforms provide safe, attractive and practical access points along the River Stour, helping guests enjoy the water while benefiting from improved grip underfoot. The project demonstrates how GripDeck® anti-slip decking can be successfully used in campsites, riverside leisure facilities and other outdoor environments where safety and appearance are equally important.
