Shotley Pier Restoration Project
GripDeck® supplied reclaimed Greenheart decking fitted with anti-slip inserts as part of the ongoing restoration of the historic Shotley Pier in Suffolk.
Project Overview
Shotley Pier is one of Britain's oldest surviving railway piers and an important part of Suffolk's maritime heritage. During the restoration of the pier, reclaimed Greenheart timber decking was selected to preserve the historic appearance and character of the structure.
GripDeck® supplied anti-slip inserts factory fitted into the reclaimed Greenheart boards, helping improve pedestrian safety while maintaining the traditional appearance of the pier.
The History of Shotley Pier
Originally constructed in 1894, Shotley Pier served as a passenger ferry terminal connecting Suffolk with Harwich and Felixstowe. The pier remains an iconic local landmark and restoration works have focused on preserving its historic structure for future generations.
Maintaining the traditional appearance of the pier was a key consideration throughout the project, making reclaimed Greenheart timber an ideal material choice.

The Challenge
Piers are exposed to some of the harshest environments possible. Rain, salt air, algae growth and constant moisture can all contribute to slippery walking surfaces.
Marine Environment
Exposure to saltwater, rain and coastal weather conditions.
Public Safety
Visitors required a safer walking surface throughout the year.
Historic Appearance
The solution needed to preserve the character of the original pier.
The GripDeck® Solution
GripDeck® anti-slip inserts were factory fitted into reclaimed Greenheart boards before installation. Two anti-slip inserts were incorporated into each board, providing enhanced grip while keeping the appearance of the original timber.
Unlike surface coatings, paints or tapes, GripDeck® inserts are permanently integrated into the timber, providing a more durable long-term anti-slip solution.
Reclaimed Greenheart
Exceptionally durable tropical hardwood historically used in marine structures.
Factory Applied Inserts
Consistent anti-slip performance integrated directly into the board.
Marine Suitability
Ideal for piers, boardwalks, marinas and waterfront projects.
Why Greenheart Was Chosen
Greenheart has been used in marine construction for generations due to its exceptional durability and resistance to harsh coastal environments.
Using reclaimed Greenheart allowed the restoration team to retain the historic character of the pier while benefiting from a timber species with a proven track record in marine applications.
