Urquhart Castle Decking Project
GripDeck® hardwood anti-slip decking supplied for walkways, bridges and visitor access routes at one of Scotland’s most iconic historic attractions.
GripDeck® Hardwood Anti-Slip Decking Supplied for Historic Environment Scotland
GripDeck® has supplied a variety of hardwood anti-slip decking solutions for improvement works throughout the grounds of Urquhart Castle, one of Scotland’s most iconic historic attractions.
Located on the shores of Loch Ness and managed by Historic Environment Scotland, Urquhart Castle welcomes large numbers of visitors each year and requires durable, low-maintenance access routes capable of withstanding heavy foot traffic and Scotland’s challenging weather conditions.
The Challenge
As a busy heritage attraction, Urquhart Castle requires safe and reliable pedestrian access throughout its grounds while preserving the character of the historic landscape.
The site includes a variety of walkways, bridges and viewing areas, each with differing structural, visual and performance requirements. Decking needed to provide reliable slip resistance in wet and exposed conditions while blending sympathetically with the surroundings.
The Solution
GripDeck® supplied a range of hardwood anti-slip decking products in multiple board sizes and anti-slip insert configurations to suit the different requirements across the site.
By using different board profiles and insert layouts, each area could be tailored to its intended use, whether for pedestrian walkways, viewing platforms or bridge structures. The factory-applied GripDeck® anti-slip inserts provide long-term slip resistance while maintaining the natural appearance and durability of hardwood timber.

The Result

The hardwood decking offers excellent durability and a natural appearance, while the anti-slip inserts help maintain reliable grip underfoot in wet and exposed conditions.
This project demonstrates how GripDeck® anti-slip decking can be successfully incorporated into sensitive heritage environments where visitor safety, durability and aesthetics are all critical considerations.
